Finally the scaffolding is all down from the main house! It is such a relief to say that. There is still some around the garage but other than that all the structural work has been done. It has been a labour of love but it feels fabulous to have that part of the restoration completed at last.
Completing the main house means we can now start to open up the main living area for guests to stay. Our time living there is coming to an end (we are moving to a barn elsewhere on the estate) and the main house will be one of our holiday lets. It will work particularly well for those people booking weddings or large parties in the house. We have a few stays booked during the summer but will start this properly in 2016. We think it will get booked quite quickly though so do get in touch if you are interested.
With the main house finished, we are turning our attention to all our outbuildings. We have demolished the old derelict greenhouse to the side of the main house and constructed a wooden building that houses the biomass heating system. We are really pleased with the heating system now it is up and running and so far so good!
The work on Rose Trees, a larger cottage in the grounds, is well underway with the roof being repaired and the heating system being replaced. With its own garden that leads down to the lake, it will be wonderful place for guests to stay and we are making it another one of our dog-friendly properties. This should be ready by the summer – watch this space!
Plans have been submitted for the final phase of the restoration programme. Our plan is to build a lovely cafe in the gardens for walkers and visitors. As part of this, we would like to restore the jetty by the old boathouse so the Keswick Launch can bring visitors from Keswick to Lingholm. The plan is for this to happen all year round and we are going to create a public footpath from the jetty through the walled garden to the cafe and then onwards to the Cumbria Way. Keswick Launch is keen to work with us on this and we will offer discounts on cream teas for anyone who has a Keswick Launch ticket.
Fingers crossed we secure planning permission for this phase!
There is always a lot going on at Lingholm but it feels great to be so far advanced with the practical work so we can start to really focus on the softer side of the refurbishment and ensuring everyone who visits Lingholm has a wonderful time.
