Skiddaw apartment has been used as holiday accommodation since the late 1890s when Beatrix Potter sat in what is now the main bedroom and painted a view of Lingholm entitled “The Rain”.

These days Skiddaw is a popular apartment that sleeps four in two bedrooms. The twin bedroom overlooking the front lawn and the main double bedroom which has dramatic views up to Skiddaw and a wonderful old fireplace that may then have been warming the room on that rather damp, wet day that Beatrix Potter did her famous painting.

Set on the second floor in the eaves of the house, Skiddaw has a spacious lounge with dining table which also has a great view of the mountain of the same name. The apartment has a compact but well equipped kitchen and a bathroom with shower over bath.

Skiddaw is on the top floor of the main house across the landing from Borrowdale apartment, they can be booked as a pair to suit larger groups holidaying together. Wifi is available throughout the apartment.

Get Out & About

The Lingholm Estate is surrounded by some of the most loved fells in the lake district and is situated on the shores of Derwentwater, making it easy to step out and enjoy your surroundings.

Keswick is a short drive from The Lingholm Estate, a lovely 45 minute walk or a five minute boat ride from the marina next door. Full of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants it’s the perfect lakeland town. Don’t miss market day on Thursdays and Saturdays all year round.

A little closer to home you will find the village of Portinscale that has a lovely cafe/restaurant The Chalet and The Farmers Arms, a traditional lakeland pub. On the other side of the estate is The Swinside Inn heading into the Newlands Valley, it has a beer garden with some of the most breathtaking view across the valley and fells. A little further on into the summer months you will find Little Town farm that serves freshly baked cakes and lunches.

Even closer to home, on weekends out of season and most days in the summer you will find a treasure of ours at the end of the drive; a vintage VW split screen camper van serving up fresh coffee, tasty baked treats and English Lakes ice cream.

The North Lakes are well known for their breathtaking views, beautiful fells and an array of outdoor activities – there really is something for everyone. You can take a trip around the lake on the launch boat which makes regular stops at different points around the lake, perfect for a days exploring.

For the more adventurous, a boat or canoe can be hired from one of the two local marinas, you can have your very own Swallow and Amazons style picnic on St. Herbert’s Island. Hybrid bikes are available to hire from the Swinside Inn or delivery can be arranged to the estate if you’d like a bike for your whole holiday.

There are plenty of attractions nearby including Honister Slate Mine where you can test your nerves on the Via Ferrata, where participants use a safety harness to scale a cliff path higher than ‘Big Ben’. Whinlatter Forest and Visitor Centre has many mountain bike trails and adventure playgrounds to explore. For the younger visitor the Lake District Wildlife Park, set just 10 minutes from The Lingholm Estate, is a great place to spend a day learning about 100 different species of animals.

There are countless walks from the estate to suit any ability, from big fells to low level lakeside strolls. The views from famous Catbells are wonderful.

The Lingholm Estate has is own private stretch of lake frontage that is used solely by guests on the estate, the perfect place for a paddle or swim when the weather’s good. The estate is set in almost 40 acres so there is plenty of space to explore, play or relax in the grounds.

Keswick is home to the Theatre by the Lake which has a broad range of plays, performances and talks throughout the year.

For those in need of somewhere to relax the estate offers guest passes to a local luxury spa and health centre at Armathwaite Hall, a 15 minute drive away. You can unwind in the outside hot tub, ease aching muscles in the sauna or relax with a glass of fizz and a good book by the pool.
